The Washington Nationals are moving forward with a home-and-home series against the Atlanta Braves, a team with an international fan base and a reputation for having high-profile violence in recent years.
Nationals President Dan Duquette told reporters Thursday that his organization has not yet decided what the series will entail.
A decision on whether to make it a regular season series or a preseason game is expected before the start of the regular season in late June.
A home game in 2020 would be the first of the Nationals’ current seven scheduled series against teams with international ties.
It’s a reminder of how far the sport has come in the United States in recent decades.
The team was once a part of the American League’s New York-Penn League.
The Nationals were sold to Comcast for $250 million in July 2017 and moved to Washington in 2015.
The franchise is playing its inaugural season in 2021.
The Braves were the last major league baseball team to be a part-owner in Washington.
They were bought by an international sports conglomerate, who also bought the Washington Nationals in 2017.
The National League is owned by Comcast.
The league’s governing body, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, also owns the Washington Redskins and Washington Mystics.
In 2018, the Nationals were fined $5 million for a racial slur in a game against the Chicago Cubs.
The incident prompted a series of tweets from Nationals president Dan DuQuette, including a tweet that said: “We are working hard to change that culture that is toxic and hurts our team and its players.
This is not about race or gender.
We will continue to strive to change it.”
The Braves are owned by the Georgia-based Fulton County Economic Development Corporation.
They are in their second season in the National League and have won the American Association title three times.
Atlanta is home to the Atlanta Hawks, the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United.
In the 2017-18 season, the Braves had a record of 42-46, one game behind Atlanta for the NL East title.
The Atlanta Braves played their final regular season game in 2021 in St. Louis, Missouri, at Nationals Park.
The series was played in Atlanta, but the stadium is not the same stadium.
The first game of the series was on April 27, 2021, when the Braves lost to the Nationals, 7-3.
That was followed by the first game on May 7, 2021.
This time, there was a 5-1 victory in St, Louis.
It was the final game of that series.
In 2017, the Atlanta Falcons played the Atlanta Cubs in a non-conference game at Turner Field.
The Cubs lost 6-1.
The next game was at Busch Stadium, where the Cubs had a 5,000-seat sellout crowd.
The last game of a series was a 3-1 win for the Nationals.
